    I can hear it now,
Another Dead White Man, probably a slave owner too.So why pay head to what he might have said?”

While he is dead and was white, he was the author of the Amistad decision, which involved a group of Africans being taken to Cuba or elsewhere in Spanish North American who took over the ship transporting them. His decision upheld the lower court ruling which said that they were being transported illegally, and thus had the right to free themselves from their captors by whatever means they could. However they overruled the lower court in so far as it had said they must be shipped back to Africa. The ruling said they were free men and could go or stay as they wished. In the event they went, but voluntarily.

He is also a recognized authority on the Constitution, and is the author of Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States
