FBI: More People Killed With Hammers/Clubs Than Rifles

Print Friendly and PDF

While gun control advocates are scrambling to label many of American’s rifles as ‘assault weapons’ and ban them (in order to keep us safe) , the government’s own law enforcement agency stats prove that rifles are not the problem.

According to the FBI annual crime statistics, the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outnumbers the number of murders committed with a rifle.

This is an interesting fact, particularly amid the Democrats’ feverish push to ban many different rifles, ostensibly to keep us safe of course.

However, it appears the zeal of Sens. like Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) is misdirected. For in looking at the FBI numbers from 2005 to 2011, the number of murders by hammers and clubs consistently exceeds the number of murders committed with a rifle.

Think about it: In 2005, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 445, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 605. In 2006, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 438, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 618.
And so the list goes, with the actual numbers changing somewhat from year to year, yet the fact that more people are killed with blunt objects each year remains constant.

For example, in 2011, there was 323 murders committed with a rifle but 496 murders committed with hammers and clubs.

Another interesting fact: According to the FBI, nearly twice as many people are killed by hands and fists each year than are killed by murderers who use rifles.

The gun grabbers don’t care about facts, we all know this. It’s time to kick them out of office as soon as possible for making our nation look so foolish and for continually threatening our rights.

      2 years and counting

  • chuck97224

    Well,
that looked suspicious to me so I investigated and found it is simply
not true. I went to the FBI site and did the for math for 2011 (the
latest data available). Total Murders: 12,664. Murders using Guns:
8,583. Percent of murders with guns: 67.77%.
    Here is my sources: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/table-20.

He said Rifles… not all guns.

      • jay

and once this article was written the Government had the FBI remove any data that supports it. Note: If you are going to attach a link, you better also save the article on your computer! Otherwise it will just be plain false!

      • chuck97224

        Good point. I missed that.

        • handyhammers

Now why would the GOV remove data?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Robert-Thomas/1280636280 Robert Thomas

Guys really? I can understand not trusting the government, but I have the 2010 reports saved on my links and the downward trend has gone on since 1991 so I don’t think they are altering the figures.

  • Rick

I would use this article in debate, but there is no link to the statistic’s source.

    • ExNoZtoTheY

      try… um…. FBI.gov?

  • http://www.facebook.com/tim.rider.927 Tim Rider

A careful reader would notice early on that this is specifically addressing ‘rifles’, and not all guns. This is relevant since the current gun control dialog seems to be heavily focused on the so-called assault RIFLES, officially being defined as anything that Dianne Fienstein or Nancy Pelosi do not like the looks of.

The FBI document that I have seen lists significant numbers of objects used to commit murders other than firearms, and states at the bottom that baseball bats seem to be the weapon of choice.

The overriding principle here, that gun control does not address the cause of the problem, and it is not possible to ban or remove everything from our society that could be used to take life, still stands.

    Sledge hammers are assault weapons.

  • ExNoZtoTheY

Please, don’t confuse liberals with facts. liberals cannot push their agendas when facts are used. That’s not playing fair. :)

Medical Doctors kill more people than are murdered by hammers , or drowned in swimming pools , and guns kill fewer than ANY of these . The ONLY thing needing BANNED in America is ignorance and stupidity , or at least the EDUCATORS responsible for such ignorance and stupidity .

    • BirdieBogey

I don’t think James Holmes was ignorant or stupid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gary.varnum Gary Varnum

We all know the reason hammers kill so many people is the powerful and racist hand-tool lobby, led by the National Hammer Association. There’s no reason for anyone to have a claw hammer with a fiberglass handle and black rubber grip.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001391534335 Wayne Bennett

That rubber grip needs to be plastic and the claws angle needs to be changed to 22.3 degrees. Plus the hammer cannot be any longer than 12.2 inches in length because that will limit the reach of the assailant.

  • Chris4657

I suppose that those who want to take away the “assault riffles” want to keep a crazy person from killing a bunch of people at one time. A lunatic with a hammer usually can only kill one or maybe two people. (Still really bad if you are one of those people killed.) I can appreciate the desire to limit the amount of damage that one madman can do, but as we know it won’t work because the only people who will lose their guns are law abiding people who aren’t a threat in the first place. That will only embolden those who would do harm to others. I, for one, believe that I not only have a right to defend and protect myself and my family, but also a responsibility to do so.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001391534335 Wayne Bennett

We are THE threat!!! We threaten their power.Thats why they want our guns.

Obama’s Intel Council Declares United States Finished As World’s Sole Superpower.

Their job is done but they are not quitting

“And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.” Daniel 5:25,26

We have warned you over and over from the beginning, that the true goal of US President Barack Hussein Obama was to collapse America from the inside. We have posted story after story to show you exactly how he planned to bring this about. And now, after only 4 years of his reign, Barack Hussein Obama’s dream of weak, powerless America is on the verge of becoming a complete reality. The best part? All of you traitors who voted him back in will get a first hand look at what life in the United States under Sharia Law will be like.

This is the change you voted for. It’s here.

      AGREE!

  • zman173rd

Not too sure about this stat. I’m a GUN / RIFLE /SHOTGUN owner and it looks suspicious that they aren’t (?) including guns in the fugure? They state “rifle” so I can’t forward this bit of information on until I know more. I know I know, I’l research it it myself. Just saying it seems phrased kinda funny like.

  • zman173rd

Did you see the attached Pic??? The man looks threatening and dangerous! His stance is provicating and to top it all off, he’s probably a UNION construction worker. And look how the hammer has some unnatural “force” eminating from the business end.

  • Hey

Cock the Hammer it’s time for action!

references, please? It’s hard to carry on an intelligent conversation with a gun-grabber without proper annotation. I *could* spend all kinds of time hunting it down at “FBI.com” but a direct link would be much appreciated.

Jan, there is the problem of the column in the FBI Uniform Crime Reports Table 20 of Firearms type unknown. It could add significantly to the amount of All Rifles. However, going by the 2010 figures, as handguns are used about 4 to 1, the amount conceivably could have been around 600 for all rifles. I was looking at an ATF study, from about 1994-2003, that had an anti-gun bias by reading it. It still said that there was no clear evidence that the assault weapons ban had made any difference in the crime rate. I don’t remember whether it was in that report or elsewhere in there, but they also said, that an average shooting was I believe, less than 7 rounds. That also destroyed the arguement that hi-cap mags are an issue in shootings, except in very rare cases. Of course we all know that but the ignorant savages on the other side don’t get it, There is also one other issue. There is no mention specifically of weapons like hammers, it they would fall into the catagory of other weapons. That total for 2011 I believe is 1,659 though so as a catagory it is higher than the all rifles and including the ones from the Rifles +the probable amount of the unknowns. And of course, that’s all rifles, not any specific ones.

  • Michael Payne

don’t worry, guns will disappear when they are made illegal, just as drugs have disappeared with drug laws. Safe and secure we will be, or perhaps we will beg for more government control in our life as we will be disarmed and in need of big government to emslave, I mean protect us.

  • lightyeare

The link to the table is: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-8

What the author didnt point out was that there are a whole bunch of “Firearm, type not stated” murders every year. Perhaps the reason why he didnt point that out was even if you take that number and divide it among Handguns, Rifles, Shotguns, and Other guns in the percentage they are reported (which is a safe assumption) you STILL have more murders with clubs and hands and feet (including pushing) and knives than you do with rifles.

If what they really cared about was our safety they would ban Handguns since handgun murders outnumber all other gun murders combined 7:1. Of course, we all know that will be next.

And then it will be knives.Like in England where they now want to ban long kitchen knives in addition to their already in place bans on gravity knives, switch blades, and carrying knives with a length of more than 3 inches. Professional chefs in England say there is no need to have long kitchen knives because you can do everything with a shorter knife that you can with a long one.

When is the last time someone committed mass murder with a hammer?

    Anyone? Anyone?

  • Daniel

hey everybody – http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/crime-in-the-u.s.-2010/tables/10tbl01.xls PLEASE FACT CHECK STUFF. the link is to the FBI website. on that page, in 2005 (a year cited above in the article) there were 16,000 appoximate murders total. on another FBI page for 2010, it showed 60 to 70% murders by firearms. i don’t know what “Admin” at “JMM News” has been smokin’ but it must be pretty wacky! p.s. i am not a gun grabber – just interested in ‘straight shooting’

By the time we can vote these ignorant idiots out of office it will be too late-they will have already passed the legislation that will disarm the American public, meaning all the honest gun-owners throughout the USA. As I see it, the first step is to impeach Obama, and the AG Eric Holder, then the rest in turn. The VP, Biden, who authored the new gun laws, is 2nd in line. It’s very strange to me that there were no massive protests demanding new gun laws in any of the other mass murders, even as far back as Columbine-but when 20 children in New England were murdered by a deranged psychopath, our whole country goes berserk and demands the disarming of America! Can you imagine how the families of these other psychos feel (BTW, who also killed themselves, as did the New Town killer) knowing that the horror of what their child did wasn’t as important to anyone of us, as the murder of these innocent little children? How pathetic is that? Shame on us!

More People Murdered Every Year with Knives, Blunt Objects, or Bare Hands than with “Assault Weapons”
