Gun Control Activist Purchases AR 15 and “High Capacity Mags”

Mark E. Kelly, gun-control proponent and husband to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, recently purchased an AR-15 (an “assault weapon,” he called it)—which he now says he intended as an illustration of the need for more stringent gun laws.

Kelly reportedly bought the AR-15 and a 1911-style semi-automatic pistol at a gun store in Tucson, Arizona.
Breitbart News received a tip on this when Neil McCabe, editor of Guns & Patriots newsletter, contacted us on March 7 and said:
Mark E. Kelly, made purchases which included an AR-15–sometimes described as an “assault rifle”–at 3:30 pm on the afternoon of March 5 at Diamondback Police Supply, 170 S. Kolb Street, Tucson, AZ.

According to McCabe, witnesses to the purchases claimed Kelly purchased “high capacity” magazines as well.
On March 6, McCabe contacted Kelly’s gun control group–“Americans for Responsible Solutions”–and on March 8 they replied that his message had been passed on to colleagues who handle press requests. Breitbart News then began investigating the details surrounding the purchase, including visiting the gun store.

Suddenly, Kelly announced on his Facebook page that he was not going to keep the AR-15, which he has yet to pick up from the store.

Days after making the purchases, Kelly wrote on Facebook:
I just had a background check a few days ago when I went to my local gun store to buy a .45. As I was leaving, I noticed a used AR-15. Bought that too. Even to buy an assault weapon, the background check only takes a matter of minutes. I don’t have possession of it yet but I’ll be turning it over to the Tucson PD when I do.

Kelly and Giffords founded their own advocacy group to restrict gun rights, Americans for Responsible Solutions, in January. On its website, ARS wrote: “High capacity magazines are a deadly factor in gun violence.” A 30-round magazine is considered a high-capacity magazine.

Word is he bought 7 or 10 round mags for the AR.

  • Larry

    Hypocrite

  • Just another staged event. A real gun owner does not announce this he simply does with out any reason to make news.

  • Im all for gun control and I will fight to the end to do something about this!!! My son is a victim of gun voilence!!!!

    • sorry about your son….but don’t BLAME the GUN !!!!

    • clifton

sorry for your loss and I will leave it at that…

    • Max K

Gun control protects liberal ideology. It does not protect PERSONS. If you believe that fewer guns make people safer, then explain that to our president (so he can then disarm the secret service and be safer that way)

    • protectourkidsnow

Sorry for your loss but can you please explain to me how banning gun purchases by law abiding citizens stops criminals from buying guns and using them to break other laws like murder?

    • hambone2

Sorry for what happened to your family but the fact is it’s illegal to shoot someone and it still happened. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.FBI stats prove where there are more legal gun owners there is less crime!

    • K

So, you “Gemini Candelario” say; your for gun control and yet, YOU don’t have a clue what so ever that “it’s” NOT about gun control, “IT’S ABOUT CONTROL”!!!
The freedom you just exercised by posting here will be gone if the American people do Not fight for their guns, their 2nd Amendment.

BTW, your son was “NOT a victim of gun violence” just because a gun or guns were present or used, but rather a victim of violence.
Because as you can’t seem to grasp, Gun are NOT Violent but, people can be.
Violence is not a gun, a knife, a club, violence is a state of mind.
YOU “Gemini Candelario” need to find another site because, this one is for Patriots that believe in and understand the importance of the 2nd Amendment and, You Don’t.

      Without “OUR” 2nd Amendment, in other words; without “OUR” Guns, this could and very well may happen here and just because, many think this could never happen here in America, it’s exactly why it could and might without “OUR” Guns;

Innocents Betrayed The True Story of Gun Control
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3KLOR1tFsD0

“Gemini Candelario” please watch ALL of this video before thinking for
one minute that this can’t or won’t happen in America. Just
because people think it won’t or can’t, doesn’t mean this isn’t the
end plan of this administrations gun control agenda.

Again; Gun Control is NOT about Guns, it’s about Control and for that control to be enacted, the Government must first disarm the American people.

Taking our guns is not going to bring your son back. Taking our guns will bring fascism and socialism and many other ills to America. Then you will be even more sorry and regretful, to boot. And if you aren’t, then there’s something wrong with you.

  • Paul

What’s his point? He can buy a firearm? And not have a criminal record? …

  • clifton

My question is why would you spend that kind of money and give one ar-15 to the police department, while your at it give them your 45.cal too…may be there is a mental health issue there…

  • James Vetzel

He’s so full of BS, his eyes are brown!

  • Roger

Just another “do as I say :not as I do “liberal .
Makes me want to barf .

  • protectourkidsnow

Heh, it doesn’t say he’ll be returning the .45. Doubt the Tucson PD is going to melt that gun down, it’ll be used in a cop’s car for sure. I guess he proved that background checks do work since I’m pretty sure a former shuttle commander is going to have a pretty clean background. Maybe he needs to follow a criminal on his way to buy a gun illegally on the street and see how easy that is, maybe then he’d realize that restricting gun purchases by law abiding citizens will not stop any violence whatsoever and will not take any guns out of the hands of any criminals.

  • Paul

Isn’t this guy a military vet? Why did he go to war? For what cause was he fighting? Was he fighting to preserve a nation of cowards? Does he even believe in the constitution, because that document is the glue that binds this nation together. It is the moral and ideological backbone. I think it extremely arrogant and short sighted, for a man to assume that constitution is outdated. These people cannot see past their noses at the larger philosophical issues. What’s at stake here. Is Earth a planet worth living on, when only tyrannical societies exist, that cannot even trust their own people with basic human freedoms? Why should any man fight for a regime that does not respect his most basic of rights to self defense? Why should any man support a regime that dehumanizes him and treats him like some cog in a machine? Our framers battled to establish a civil society; one that understands, appreciates, and respects the freedom of others to live their life as they choose. That was the big accomplishment of the enlightenment. To stand against that, is to stand against the great philosophers and thinkers that produced the ideas of freedom and liberty we cherish today.

    • Paul

It is my view, that liberals support the modern equivalent of a counter-enlightenment. During the enlightenment, a great deal of progress was made in the human sciences. People began to understand the mentality of human beings, how they work, what motivates them, and how to effectively organize a society in order to bring about prosperity and cultural sophistication. To stand against this is to basically say “well, all this stuff was just bologna, let’s go back to the monarchies and absolute control of ages past.” To me, it’s the equivalent of a person today, who claims to be a scientist, declaring, “welll, let’s just do away with calculus, we clearly don’t need it, the earth is flat anyway.”

You can’t just put the genie back in the bottle. Just because you stick your head in the sand and act like Capitalism is some great evil, while communism is the pure, utopian answer, doesn’t change the realities of both. The reality is that liberals support a failed and outmoded ideology. They call themselves progressives, yet in reality they are like flat-earther’s.

  • americium

What would the police want with one of those nasty old “assault rifles”? I’d be more than happy to take that scary death machine off his hands for him.

  • seaofteamerican

Yea! Right Kelley and you’re supposedly one of us veterans who swore an “Oath” ? Which one ? Though my prayers went out to your wife and others on that dreadful day please don’t think you’re going to lump us with that nut? I’m sincerely glad to see your wife recovering so well but our Rights are our Rights don’t be with the ones who are trying to bend, twist and fore go our U.S.Constitution.

  • I guess when people drink themselves to death, they are going to stop selling 30 packs and only sell 6 and 12 packs too.

  • Saintsation

    Hypocrite!

  • lonewolfsniper

Yes, mr kelly. Why don’t you follow a gangbanger to an illeagal gun purchase and see what happens. Oh, and don’t forget to take your 1911 and AR-15 along with you also. Cause believe me your going to need them when they see you filming the buy.

  • US Army (retired)

REMEMBER, it is NOT about guns, it is about CONTROL!!
    MOLON LABE!

  • Billa

The police won’t want it, they’re waiting to get actual REAL (selective fire) assault rifles like DHS is getting. What a hypocrite, caught with his pants down. And another thing, there’s a lot of us out here who will think twice about protecting you anti-gun, anti-constitution types with OUR personal defense weapons, should the need arise. You all can wait on the cops. Ammo is expensive and hard to find nowdays! Ladies, learn to shoot, my wife and daughter love it and have confidence in their ability to protect themselves or others. Like the saying goes “Colt makes all men (&women) equal.”

    • I don’t believe there is such a thing as an “assault rifle”: assault is a type of behavior, not a type of hardware. Also, infantry soldiers don’t use the term “assault rifle” for their battle rifles. Because the term is a political creation, similar to “Islamophobia”: such terms attempt to paint critical thinkers as bad guys before even looking at their evidence (this makes such terms valuable and often-used as propaganda tools). But anyway, here is a sticker that somebody has on their vehicle, addressing the “expensive ammo” situation: http://www.thedailyblender.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/5aN2n.jpg

  • garryfowen

Yeah, wasn’t his wife, Gabby, a concealed carry holder? Instead of blaming the gun, perhaps SHE could have prevented the tragedy at Tuscon by carrying that day. If it would have saved just one innocent life, shouldn’t she have tried?

    • jugatsu

If she’d done that and prevented the shootings, I wonder what tune the Giffords would be singing today…or are they just died-in-the-wool fascists? I despise people who think they know better than everyone else (people they don’t know and are not a part of their “clan”) and attempt to legislate every action and inaction a person can make and not make. They are legislators of the minutia. It can’t be done, given our resources and people’s strong will of individuality and self-determination, those things that separate us at the core from the animal kingdom. They are “regressives”, they are control freaks, they are anti-human rights and violators of human rights and the laws of nature and God and even man, whenever it suits them for whatever reason du jour that suits them. God save us from the faux Liberals! Liberalism was, and truly is, a Good thing, until the Leftists got hold of the word and abused it to fool people into thinking they are what they truly are not at heart, in mind or in spirit. They are incapable of speaking the truth, for their beliefs and agendas require lies, brainwashing via mass media and group dynamics through psychological trickery, and usurpation of the powers of the citizen, in order to be forwarded. These people are truly evil and must be ripped from any and all positions of responsibility, over our children in schools, over us in places of government, and from military and policing positions of power and control; today, now, fast and furiously.

  • Yeah sure he was gonna turn it over until he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar now he gonna turn it in what a hyprocrite

  • Mark Kelly is a TOOL…

  • Junk Bin

Hypocrite, same liberal crap, do as I say not as I do. I am special so there

  • It was for Gabby…she can’t get one. It would make her look like…him?

  • Bud

Based on the article, Mark kelly’s actions smell fishy, especially after his position on gun control has been exposed nationally. Nonetheless, he could have donated the cost of the AR-15 to the police benevolent association or a local shelter for abused women.

  • Bill

WHAT a PHONY LIAR !! Just “normal” for the left-winged zealots !!

  • Bullet Bob

I think these people are the new Brady Bunch. Is he going to be taking his wife all around the country to get honorarium for appearances about gun control? Nice gig, capitalizing on your wifes misfortune. Kind of like John (jigelow) Kerry marrying Senator Heinz’s wife for the money and influence. The liberal mindset has no shame let alone morality!

    • jugatsu

A Leftist would have to look both words up in a dikshunaree.

People, please stop abusing the word “Liberal” when talking about these Leftists, Fascists, Socialists, Communists, Control Freaks, whatever else is more accurate. They are not anything resembling, and do not believe in anything remotely related to, Liberalism.

  • jugatsu

He’s a liar. He obviously believes an AR-15 and semi-auto pistol are viable weapons of self-defense and didn’t think anyone would notice his purchases. He’s right not, if not already done so, looking for some way to acquire those weapons without notice and public exposure, which means he’s probably contacting family or friends to straw-man purchase the weapons for him and his hypocrite wife.

  • G-reg

This guy is full of so much crap his eyes are a different shade of brown. He bought that rifle because he is an insider and knows what is about to go down.

  • Dodie1990

It is a legal purchase. Unlike the national registry, of you are okayed by the criminal background check, you can purchase the 45 (the standard military sidearm for years) and rhe AR-15, a legal rifle. he did nothing milloins of law abiding citizens have done. The problem is, he wants to stop you from doing this.
