Taxpayer Bailed Out GM to Build New Plant in CHINA

General Motors Co., the largest foreign automaker in China, said it won regulatory approval to build a Cadillac factory to boost sales of luxury vehicles in the world’s biggest automobile market.

The National Development and Reform Commission has signed off on the plant, which will be located in Shanghai’s Jinqiao zone, with construction beginning in June, Dayna Hart, a GM spokeswoman, said in an e-mail today. Investments will total at least 8 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) and annual production capacity will be 150,000 units, she said.

The plant would allow GM to avoid paying China’s 25 percent import tariff as it seeks to bolster Cadillac sales in the country. The move is part of Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson’s plans for the luxury brand to compete with Bayerische Motoren Werke AG’s BMW and Volkswagen AG’s Audi.

I will NEVER , UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES buy another GM product , not even a used one , and will get on any acquaintances case that does . From this day forward I am a TOYOTA man ONLY . Maybe Ford , depends on circumstances .

    • Swore by them all my life now a Ford gal!!

    • bleufishcat

That’s funny. Depending on the model Toyotas are made in Japan! Most parts for ANY car are made overseas too! Good luck with your boycott.

      • Trucker

I haul Toyota Parts from M,I to San Antonio, to Ca ,from Ga,
to San Antoino Tx.so far they are companys not ships

      • Centurian2010

Our federal government did not bailout those manufacturers with our hard earned tax dollars. If we are giving them our money then they should be expected to produce American jobs.

        • bleufishcat

Silly you thinking we bailed out a product. We bailed out a pension fund!

  • Garman

    Toyota = Japanese
    Ford =Brazil
With out tax system whaddya gonna do?

  • MarDo

Fifty years of GM cars in our family…….NO more ,,,,,,,,it will be FORD from here on out……

  • I will never buy another gm product> Ford , dodge,or chrysler

USE TAXPAYER MONEY FOR A BAIL OUT THEN GM THANK US BY BUILDING A PLANT IN CHINA, THAT IS REAL APPRECIATION TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.. IN THE CITY I LIVE WE HAD A GM PLANT THAT BUILT S-10’S AND OTHER MODELS. THEY BUILT A NEW PLANT ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO THAT COST MILLIONS TO BUILD IT WASN’T TWO OR THREE YEARS THAT THEY CLOSED THAT PLANT AND BUILING ANOTHER ONE IN SOME OTHER STATE, THAT SEEMS A LITTLE CRAZY TO ME. G.M. SAID THEY HAD ONE OF THE BEST WORK FORCE AT THIS PLANT THAT THEY CLOSE AS TO ANY PLANT IN THE COUNTRY. I HAVE ALWAYS PREFERRED THE GM BRAND OF VEHICLES BUT I’M BEGINING TO GET MY DOUBTS. WE LOST A LOT OF MONEY ON HE GM BAILOUT. BUT I WOULD IMAGINE THAT OUR KING OR THE THINKS HE IS, ENCOURAGE GM TO BUILD THE PLANT OVER THERE. HE LOVES CREATING JOBS FOR FORGEINERS BUT NOT FOR AMERICANS.

  • How many chinamen are there that can afford a Cadillac in that country? I mean, when all of the Communist leaders have bought a caddy, will they slow production to a couple dozen per year?

    • Carl in SC

I’m sure many of those Cadillacs will be shipped to several other nations from China, so not to worry.

  • Zepp

And all those poor GM workers fell for the Obama lies again. Sure he would keep jobs here in America.

  • Robert Moulds

I know the United States owes China but a bailed out car company though some of the bailout was their money. This hurts General Motors owns the jeep brand world war two winner and the Humvee the four wheel drive that made the army forget the jeep.

GM, Boeing, GE Healthcare, Westinghouse, Google, Microsoft, Apple and the list goes on… On our last visit to China we drove past the Massive Boeing plant and just like the steel mills once these plants are built and running the ones in the US will close. FYI – That new Boeing plant when completed will be 1000 times larger than that in Seattle.

    • Carl in SC

I expected that Boeing would build overseas after the labor union and Obama government wanted to prevent the plant in Charleston from opening until Boeing agreed to union concessions in Seattle. Labor unions seem more like theives than workers.

I work for GM. What exactly is the beef. GM has been an international company for years. They have brought numerous product lines back to USA. With logistics being the largest single express in our business, sometimes it makes sense to build overseas. The plant is being built because GM is in a good position to do so. Like other car companies based in the USA doing the same thing. GM’s next Camaro is returning to the USA after being built in Canada as did numerous truck lines a few years ago. GM makes great cars here in the USA. I hope you can find one like, buy it and enjoy it. Thank you for saving my job and the jobs thousands like me. I hope we can work hard enough to earn you trust, respect and your business…

I drive an escalade but it will be my last GM vehicle to come to my garage as I would not touch one now. I have owned chevy trucks, GMC trucks and other GM products but no more. The way this was all handled sure showed the people what the government has planned for other businessses and our country.

    • Bob

How many car plants did they build in the south before the Saturn plant? Most chicken @@@@ car company ever and I’ve probably owned 10 of them 1 ford no chryslers and now 6 Toyotas a VW and a Subaru. What have they got against the south other than its bias against unions?????????

      • Carl in SC

Agreed, Bob. I remember that GM and Ford had factories in metro Atlanta until maybe 25 or 30 years ago when they closed them. They must not like the south. BMW and other foreign carmakers now have factories in SC, ALA, TN, Mississippi. So who needs overpriced GM vehicles?

  • pysco

And this administration, had the balls, to talk about Romney’s over seas investments

    • Centurian2010

Don’t forget, Romney also said that GM was sending jobs overseas and obama denied it.

  • Joe1938

GM Chief Executive Officer, Dan Akerson states that 7 out 10 GM vehicles are manufactured outside of the US. How do you union folks like that? It is also your tax money and loss of jobs.

  • Some people just like to complain. That is my job stop doing my job!

  • Nadine

Obama is hell bent on destroying this country financially so he can restructure it….WE must not let this happen!

  • jenniewalsh

If anyone really wants to know how the American people are being used, abused, conned, fleeced and basically destroyed by the globalist organized crime syndicate, the Rothschild Dynasty…. MUST SEE! youtube.com/watch?v=WzytGJh9cBY —– David Icke Almost 7 hours. VERY eye-opening and educational!

Frankly, why should I care anymore?? I was strongly against the bailout of UAW unions at GM and Chrysler from the time it was proposed and I have no intent to buy a new vehicle from General Motors. The Chinese will benefit by building Cadillacs in China, thus building much cheaper than buying the UAW built models and saving the extra tariff. I question why GMC, Chrysler and other US automakers are not building more models in Mexico and South America. This would give thousands of Hispanics jobs in their homelands so they wouldn’t work here and leave families at home.
