IRS Mistakenly Posts Thousands of Social Security Numbers on Internet

The IRS mistakenly posted the Social Security numbers of tens of thousands of Americans on a government website, the agency confirmed Monday night. One estimate put the figure as high as 100,000 names.
The numbers were posted to an IRS database for tax-exempt political groups known as 527s and first discovered by the group Public.Resource.org.

The California-based group said it learned of the “privacy breach” while working on an unrelated audit of an “improperly vetted shipment” of IRS data on DVDs and promptly informed the agency, which shut down the site the next day. The group said the Social Security numbers were largely those of donors, though some were also from people who prepared tax returns to furnish to the IRS.

An IRS spokesman told FoxNews.com on Monday the agency was alerted about a “substantial number” of Social Security numbers posted on the site and removed web access to the information “out of an abundance of caution.” The spokesman also said the IRS is now “assessing the situation and exploring available options.”

A message on the agency’s 527 homepage asks visitors to check back Monday, but the site was still down Monday evening.

Public.Resource.org. founder Carl Malamud told FoxNews.com on Monday night that roughly 100,000 Social Security numbers were exposed.
Malamud said in a statement on the group’s website that it hopes the Obama administration will act to restore access to the agency’s nonprofit database and resolve its concerns over what it described as a “serious violation of federal law.”

The IRS “mistakenly” posts thousands of SSN’s … yeah, right, and I got some beach front property in Kansas for sale. Who wants to bet that 90% of these “mistakenly” posted SSN’s are conservatives, or libertarians? The IRS needs to be abolished and replaced with a flat or fair tax.

    • Shawn O’Loughlin

You got that right. This was done to give his “brown votes” valid SS#s to use to get jobs (read welfare). What this administration won’t do to destroy America from within.

Thank you for stating what I was going to post! I agree whole heartedly that the names should be checked out for this and then the whole IRS one and all should be charged and tried for their crimes of fraud lying and treason! they should one and all in the office that purportedly made the so called mistake imprisoned and terminated and blackballed from ever working in any government agency ever again after serving their sentences!!

  • Al Dailey

ANYONE THAT HAD A HAND IN THIS BULLSHIT NEEDS FIRED AND CHARGED BECAUSE AS STATED ABOVE IT WAS a “serious violation of federal law.” DANG, FORGOT THE PRESENT ADMINISTRATION AND ALL THE ASS KISSERS DON’T ABIDE BY THE SAME LAWS AS THE REST OF US DO.

  • John Lappe

Yeah, accident my butt. the head of theIRS needs to go to jail along with the rest of the Administration, or maybe loose their job along with a whole lot of TSA workers!

It sounds to me like it was the IRS “butch-slapping ” conservatives; probably under the direction of Obama, himself. Now how exactly does the IRS just happen to make a mistake like that? Answer, just like the way the targeted Tea Partiers with audits. Those guys are slimy and not to be trusted!

  • Conservativesniper

Will any of the monstrously inept bureaucrats in the IRS be held accountable for this glaring example of my favorite oxymoron, “government efficiency”?

  • agbjr

Repeal the onerous Sixteenth Amendment and the IRS becomes moot. Then repeal the unconstitutional Seventeenth Amendment and restore the balance of power the Founding Fathers built into the Constitution.

  • Zoraida

I do not believe in mistakes!!!!

  • Chris

Mistakenly posted them- wink wink. The federal government has lost all credibility.

  • Joe Lettieri

Our government resembles the German Gov in the late 1930’s more and more every day.

  • hfr49

Yea, let’s give this bunch all of our personal medical information and have them in the middle of our medical health care. What could possibly go wrong??

  • Jim28thReg

this is no mistake. Our MISTAKE is allowing these criminals to continue getting away with this crap. We should all send our social cards back to them , demand all our money back with interest especially since it’s all an illegal scam in the first place.

They no doubt picked the names from their “hate” list. BOZO’s hate list. Would not put anything past him because he does such juvenile things. Some illegal probably has our soc. sec. numbers just waiting for we senior citizens to bite the dust. They no doubt found my phone line boring as I only use it 3X’s a month. Nothing interesting about my email either. GOD bless our military and the USA. Raise our USA flags high, and carry a bible around…… piss off/on the muslims.
BOZO: if you are reading my post…..you are the worst illegal president that ever existed, not to mention no education, no brains, and you never grew up.
