Last Primary Lead Smelter in U.S. to Close Due to EPA Regulations

If the government can’t get enough support from lawmakers to ban guns, ammunition control is the next best avenue for accomplishing the mission.
Once this primary Lead Smelter closes in December, entirely domestic manufacture of conventional ammunition, from raw ore to finished cartridge, will be impossible.

The EPAs National Ambient Air Quality Standard that is now 10 times tighter than the previous standard.
For this reason, in December, the last primary lead smelter in the United States has decided to close its doors.
The Herculaneum, Missouri Smelter, owned and operated by the Doe Run Company, has been in existence in the same location since 1892.

Whatever the EPA’s motivation when creating the new lead air quality standard, increasingly restrictive regulation of lead is likely to affect the production and cost of traditional ammunition. Just this month, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that will ban lead ammunition for all hunting in California. The Center for Biological Diversity has tried multiple times to get similar regulations at the federal level by trying, and repeatedly failing, to get the EPA to regulate conventional ammunition under the Toxic Substances Control Act.

The Missouri smelter is currently the only smelter in the United States which can produce lead bullion from raw lead ore that is mined nearby in Missouri’s extensive lead deposits, giving the smelter its “primary” designation. The lead bullion produced in Herculaneum is then sold to lead product producers, including ammunition manufactures for use in conventional ammunition components such as projectiles, projectile cores, and primers. Several “secondary” smelters, where lead is recycled from products such as lead acid batteries or spent ammunition components, still operate in the United States.

Now you know why the government was buying all that ammo. Time is near,

    • Shawn O’Loughlin

Fortunately, there are thousands of feds carrying around all that ammo we paid for. At least we know where it is when the time comes that we need it and have to take it back,

  • Conservative Mark

Lead will be a precious metal. Good thing we can pour bullets over the kitchen stove.

    • Tina Thomas

People have made their own bullets for years. They seem to forget that.

      • Mark Cohen

Still at it huh Tina? smh

      • markshlitz

And we will get the lead from where? to pour in our kitchens…

  • billy jack

Yep. DHS stands for ‘Destroy Homeland Security’. They are not your friends.

  • Jon Galt

Good thing I stocked up when prices were low!

Told you it was going to come to this……tell me the Obama administration doesn’t have an agenda!

  • Jeff Brodhead

So instead of smelting lead in THIS country, where the effects on the global environment are carefully watched, some back-asswards country will be doing the smelting on the edge of the only water source for a hundred million people. Makes sense[!]

    • Nancy Pickering Churchill

It’s all about control, and seeing how far they can go!

  • Ronald Peterson

Come on people, this has been debunked for over a month. This is a primary smelter that is closing. They take ore from the ground and make primary lead from it. It has nothing to do with ammo manufacturers. Ammo manufacturers do not use Primary lead! And most ammo manufacturers have a 2-3 year stockpile of lead reserves. Their main source of supplies of lead comes from recycled car batteries. And we bitch about the mainstream media lying to us. Please check your facts before you start making wild claims. It just hurts the cause.

  • Nancy Pickering Churchill

keep it up Obama and administration! You are making it easier for the conservatives to win elections! People are getting darn sick and tired of being told what we can and cannot do! I am so glad Obama care is helping too! That sure backfired on em! Wonderful! We will make our own bullets, that’s what they used to do!

  • Don Sebold

Keep pennies melt them down if neede….

  • aintthispeachy

Oh No where will they get the lead to make batteries for all the electric cars?
seriously the EPA also controls the air we exhale,… when will they come and tell us to stop breathing.
Or how about this,… the government runs another industry out of the United States.
